Tuna Industry

One of the pride of General Santos City, Philippines is their most delicious fresh tuna. Because of this, General Santos City celebrates "Tuna Festival" in every month of September.General Santos City is a three time awardee for the "Most Competitive City" in the Philippines for the years 1999-2000 (all cities), 2000-2001 (mid-sized city) and 2001-2002, an honor bestowed by the Asian Institute of Management SGV policy forum and the Department of Trade and Industry. 

For this reason, fishing is a PhP50 billion industry in the Philippines. It contributes about 4% of the country’s GNP. With an annual production volume of 2.4 million metric tons of fish, it directly provides livelihood and employment to over one million Filipinos.Tuna is among the 200 or so species of fish found in the country that have high commercial value. The Philippines ranks 7th among the top tuna producing countries in the world, both in terms of fresh/frozen tuna and canned tuna.

Indeed, These salient special features of the General Santos Fish Port Complex could well be competitive with the international fish port facilities catering the ever growing tuna industry of General Santos City.
